When Mater Dei and Westlake met on Oct. 2,
ping g30 driver, Westlake needed a fourth quarter comeback to make it a close home loss. The sequel Friday night in a CIF SS Pac 5 Division first round playoff game promised to be better.
However Westlake proved this movie would be a haunting repeat as the visiting Monarchs (9 2) dominated the Warriors on their way to a 28 7 victory and advanced to face Corona Centennial in the second round.
After being shut out in the first half, Westlake (8 3) found life to open the third quarter as the Warriors scored on a 1 yard run by Malik Henry. Henry aided the drive with a 44 yard pass to Theo Howard that landed them on the Mater Dei 2 yard line.
It would be the only sign of life as Westlake had five turnovers and struggled against a furious pass rush that kept Henry on the run most of the night.

The Warriors added another first down when Henry hit Howard with a 14 yard pass but the joy was short lived. A holding penalty pushed them back to their 14 yard line and on the next play, Henry pass was intercepted by Gerran Brown and returned 15 yards for a touchdown.
Mater Dei tailback Adrian Contreras, who ran for 77 yards before halftime and finished with 172 yards on 26 carries. Jack Lowary added 118 passing yards, including a 46 yard touchdown pass to Ben Humphreys for the game first score.
The star was Monarchs defensive end Malik McMorris who had a sack, two fumble recoveries and added a rushing touchdown in the second quarter.

Henry finished with 117 yards on 13 for 26 passing and Jasmin was held to 52 rushing yards. Theo Howard had seven catches for 72 yards as Westlake only managed six total first downs for the game.
It was a rough end to a season for the Marmonte League champions. It also ended the prep career of Westlake seniors, including Kevin Robledo who finished as California all time leader in field goals made.
